I just got back from visiting my old-time friend Rob in Bloomington, Indiana. According to him, the glaciers which covered the midwest back in the day stopped about 20 miles north of his town. There were noticable geographic incongruencies with the rest of Indiana which seem to prove this. The terrain is noticably hillier. The ground is also full of clay. He has been taking his new status as a homeowner seriously and had a large pile of orange dirt to the side of his yard he had displaced while making his own patio. I helped him throw together a patio set he had purchased from a Memorial Day sale at Menards.
Many of the houses in his neighborhood are rundown rentals. That and the fact this was his first serious home project amplified his sense of accomplishment. It's not too bad of a place considering it was a former meth lab.
Speaking of buildings, the campus of the University of Indiana, Bloomington has an odd architectural style. Almost all of the buildings are stone. They're formed in a way which make them look bold and imposing. It was a fairly large campus adjacent to downtown Bloomington.
The drive down there was scenic. The county road wound wildly through the hills and trees of southern Indiana. I watched for deer the entire way since the woods came right up to the road.
I haven't left Minnesota for a year. It's good to get away for awhile.

Bloomington is a beautiful place and I'm glad that my geologic lesson on the glaciers took hold...But honestly, it sounds a little patronizing to say "amplified his sense of accomplishment." There was no amplification...only pure accomplishment.
Home ownership sure beats renting.
By the way, did you know I had to create a blog just to post this comment?
It wouldn't be poetic if I just said "Rob built a patio. It was an accomplishment," now would it?
I have the post settings set to keep away the unclean. There's plenty of those on the WWW.
